Sometimes I just really, really miss Austin. Like yesterday when I was filing my taxes or when the temperature drops below 40 or when I’m eating another black bean burger (Charlotte restaurants must think that’s all vegans eat!) or on Sundays when football starts at one instead of noon.
At times like these, there’s nothing I crave more than a Mexican Martini. A few sips of this original Austin concoction and I’m transported back to ATX: land of no state taxes, sun-tanning in March, vegan options at every restaurant, and epic Sunday Fundays. Now, you too, can enjoy a little piece of Austin, right in your own home!
A Mexican Martini is similar to a margarita, but way better and served in a martini glass with olives. I adapted this recipe from the Texas Monthly’s version. It’s definitely the most authentic one I’ve found and the author’s retelling of the history of the Mexican Martini is well worth the read.
Enjoy!
- 3 oz. tequila
- 1½ oz. lime juice
- 1 oz. Cointreau
- ½ oz. green-olive brine from the jar
- splash of fresh orange juice
Garnish:- lime wedges and olives
- salt
- Mix ingredients in a martini shaker with ice.
- Strain into a salt-rimmed martini glass.
- Clear your schedule for the rest of the day and enjoy!

I LOVE Mexican martinis, and they aren’t easy to find outside of Texas. This was great at the Super Bowl – makes me that much more excited for pool season to start!
